How does being skilled change you? Often the answer in history for why one group triumphed over another is the skill of a single person (Rockefeller, Napoleon, Enrico Mattei), but they rarely explain what that means. Why was Rockefeller able to run more efficient refineries than any of his competitors? People often just say he was better, but what did that actually entail? One clue is that he actually looked at what expenses were and managed them in a way nobody else did at the time. I wish I understood this about everyone. Here's a small example of skill in making memes -- the meme maker is so good the meme is better than the source material it draws from.

I'm glad that you have made it through the year.
I know not everything has been going smoothly all the time, and some things are really hard. You might be tempted to look back on how this year went and just see all the weaknesses: The personal milestones you didn't hit, the projects you paused or hobbies you dropped, all the blogging you wanted to do and didn't, the posts you published and then unpublished because of shame.
But it's fine. It's better to try and fail than to never try at all. The time will pass anyway. You'll know better next time. Right now, you deserve the rest and joy you have so often deprived yourself of over the course of the year, no if's or but's.
Don't yet think about what the new year will entail, don't try to cram even more ambitious stuff into it; please take care of yourself, sit with yourself, and enjoy it. Life is short, and you cannot take anything with you when you die. So allow yourself to cherish and witness the small things, and take it one step at a time. Things will work itself out.
